Hungarian wrecks and relics - Red-White-Green Ladies in Waiting
Alsónémedi
The so called "Roncs-Ranch" (Ranch of Wrecks) can be found south of the village, along road no. 5. It is necessary to ask for permission in the building to get in. The owner is cleaning up the scrapyard, so there are less and less planes month by month. A few years ago about 15 MiG-15s (both 15bis and 15UTI), some MiG-17PFs, MiG-19PMs and MiG-21s (F-13s, Us and a Czechoslovak F) were at the scrapyard, among some other civvies. These days (summer of 2007) only two MiG-21s and a Yak-28R (arrived from Debrecen) is still there.
Békéscsaba
There is a MiG-15bis at the civil airfield where the 1986 acrobatic world championship took place. It can be easily seen from the Békéscsaba-Gyula road (No. 44).
Bócsa
The unmarked Li-2 can be found at the southern end of the village, near a petrol station.
Börgönd
There should be a MiG-15bis at this ex military airfield.
Budaörs
Budaörs is one of the most important general aviation airfield of Budapest, west from the capital. There is a MiG-21F-13 preserved here.
Budapest
There is a small aircraft collection of the Transport Museum in the "Petőfi Csarnok", located at the Városliget, a big park in the city. It mostly includes small civil aircraft, but there is also a SM-1 (Mi-1) and an ex-military Yak-18 in civil markings.
In the southern part of the city is the collection of instructional aircraft of the Kossuth Lajos Szakközépiskola (Technical School). Ka-26s, SM-1s and a MiG-21MF can be found at the southern end of Szabadkikötő street, XXI. district.
There is a small collection of aircraft at Ferihegy International Airport, including a former military Li-2P and an ex Soviet Air Force Il-14.
Dunaújváros
South of the city, along road no. 6 there is a civil airfield, guarded by a MiG-15bis on a pole.
Jakabszállás
A MiG-15bis is preserved at this new civil airfield, with a monument of Icarus.
Kecel
The really huge military museum (one of the largest of its kind in Europe) has aircraft also. Although some of them are in false markings or armed with wrong weapons, they are in excellent condition. The history of the Hungarian Air Force can be tracked from the MiG-15bis to the MiG-23MF, but a Swedish Draken is also exhibited.
Kecskemét
There are some dumped and preserved MiGs (from 15bis to 21MF) at the one and only fighter base of the Hungarian Air Force. The MiG-29s and L-39ZOs withdrawn from use are also stored here. There are two planes of note, an Il-28 in sad condition, used as ground target, and a beautiful MiG-21F-13 on pole at the main gate.
Nagyatád
A MiG-21 arrived here to the local military technics park from Papa.
Pápa
There are some 70 MiGs and Sukhois stored at the Hungarian Tucson (which can.t be seen from the outside), apart from the MiG-15bis, 19PM and 21F-13 preserved at one of the gates. The number of planes is decreasing, as some of them are sold or gone to other places as exhibition inmates.
Pécs
There was a Li-2 preserved in the Vidámpark (Amusement Park), but it went to Budaörs in 2004.
Solt
There is a MiG-15UTI at a petrol station between Solt and Dunaföldvár, on the eastern bank of the Danube, along road no. 52. It was mounted on a pole, but fallen down, damaging its nose.
Szeged
The Li-2 preserved here burnt out, and the wreckage went to Budaörs.
Székesfehérvár
In the past two Mi-2s could be seen at the Firemen Station along road No. 8. At the western end of the city, also along road No.8 a Ka-26 can be found at a petrol station.
Szentkirályszabadja
There was a Mi-24D and a Mi-8 preserved at the gate at this former helicopter base. The Mi-24s and Mi-8s withdrawn from use were also stored here. However, the gate guards were moved to Pápa, while the stored helicopters went to Mezőfalva.
Szolnok
The museum of the Hungarian Air Force can be found at the outskirts of the military airfield. It mainly consist of ex HuAF planes, but there are some foreign and civil planes also (Tu-134, Turkish and German F-104s, Swedish Lansen, and so on).
There is a military technical school located at the base, with some instructional airframes, most of them in excellent condition.
The base itself has some withdrawn aircraft too, including An-26s, Mi-2s and Mi-8s, with the very necessary gate guard MiG-15bises and a MiG-21F-13.
Taszár
This unused military base has some preserved aircraft, but not at the airfield, rather at the barracks of the air force.
Tápiószecső
A MiG-21 is standing here at the barracks.
Tököl
Tököl is an ex-soviet base, nowadays a civil airfield, but the Danubian Aircraft Factory, an overhaul plant is also located here. It has a MiG-15UTI in really bad shape, two instructional MiG-21s (these two are no longer there!), and some stored Mi-2s, including ex Soviet AF and NVA ones.
Vecsés
The Alsónémedi collection was here at the beginning of the nineties, but all the aircraft went to their new place.
